Weekly Update
12/1/10
Greetings Riders,
Well, for those of us that were
asking for it to cool down, we have gotten our wish. It has
definitely been a little chilly for our part of the country, but it is still a
welcome relief from the long Summer we had around here. But the cool weather is
just in time to get everyone in the mood for some toy rides that are coming your
way.
Speaking of toy rides, I would like to give you
some details of the Cyclerides.com
Toys To Kids event coming up on December 11th.I have been
involved with this event since the beginning back in 2003 and am happy to
say that this is the 8th year that we will be able to make a difference by
helping over 100 needy kids have a much better Christmas. This is
really more of a "ride-in" than a traditional ride. Due to the difficulty of
doing escorted rides, I decided last year to just make it a destination event
and it seems to work out very well that way. The event location last year
was at Rawhide, this year Westgate has volunteered to host the event right
where we have bike night on Coyote Blvd. at Westgate City
Center.
For those not familiar with the Toys to
Kids event, instead of the usual type of toy ride where
you drop off toys to a location, we bring the kids to the toys. This year we
will bus in 100 underprivileged and homeless children from the Children First
Academy in downtown Phoenix ages 6-12 years. They will be fed, entertained and
at the end of the program will be allowed to pick out any 3 toys from the
stack of toys that they would like. But to keep with the spirit of Christmas and
to teach these young children about giving, we ask that they pick out 2 toys for
themselves and then pick out one special toy for a friend, brother or sister who
couldn't come that day. We have found that these kids grasp that concept really
quick and end up spending more time picking out a toy for their friend than they
do for themselves. Amazing to see those that have so little, so anxious to give
to freely. A truly heart warming sight to see and be a part of.
The students who enroll in Children First Academy - Phoenix are not
typical public school students. Many of the children routinely go
without life's basic necessities - food, clothing, air conditioning, and
most importantly a stable home life. Although many of the students never
spend more than one night in the same place, they always have their school to
attend each day. It fulfills much more than the typical school's role; it is the
sense of stability these children so desperately need. A day like the Toys To
Kids event, where THEY are the focus of attention, is a
very memorable day for them, and for the riders who come to share
their joy.
If you haven't participated in this event
before, I would encourage you to give it a try this year. It is
always a good time full of Christmas cheer. For those of you that come every
year, the kids appreciate your continued support. So ride in, or drive, bring
the whole family if you like. Saddle Ranch will start serving a breakfast buffet
for $8.99 starting at 9:00am. Music will begin at 9am and the stage will be open
to place your unwrapped toy. Additional toys will be dispersed to local
shelters.
This year we will be setting up a stage in the
middle of events plaza. complete with a sound system provided by
David Darnell at Big D's Mobile DJ's. There will be entertainment for the kids and the
adults including Bret Kaiser as Elvis doing a few
songs to entertain the crowd and a special guest 12 year old singer that will
really impress you and inspire us all. Then our "special guests", the kids from
Children First Academy, will take the stage to sing you 2 songs of appreciation
and thanks. This is always a great way to end the day. There will also be a
Hot Rod and Classics Car Show at
Westgate on the same day from 10am - 3pm and a Farmer's Market. So after the toy
event, you will have plenty for the whole family to do.

This is my favorite event that I get to do. It
is a very rewarding and uplifting day. I appreciate all of you that
participate and have supported us to give these kids a day that is just about
them. They are fed, entertained, given gifts and leave like they are on top of
the world. You have no idea what this means to them. Their teachers always
tell me that the kids look forward this event the entire year. Look forward
to seeing you there.
Before you make your decision to come or not, I
would encourage you to watch this short video of the ride from
a couple of years ago. The words and music could not be more true today.
