Cyclerides.com Weekly
Update
11/6/13
Greetings Riders,
What a beautiful weekend in Arizona. Hopefully you were able
to take advantage of this perfect weather in some way. For me, I tried to make
it a family week. I flew my 88 year old Father to Payson for breakfast and then
for a stop in Sedona so that he could see those beautiful red rocks at eye
level. What was so special about that trip was that he was a pilot himself back
in the day. I remember being about 5 years old when he would put me in the
luggage area of a Piper Cub and take off from our runway on the farm back in
Kansas. Fast forward 52 years and now I am flying him around. But I let him set
up front. He thoroughly enjoyed the day as did I. It occurred to me that this
instance is a perfect example of the Circle of Life. I am blessed to still have
him around, healthy and vibrant at his age. He will be 89 in January and I don’t
even have to help him in the plane.
On Saturday afternoon, I went to the other end of the spectrum, backing up
the clock 86 years
as I spent some quality time with my Grandsons
who are 2 1/2 and just over 1 year old. It sure is fun to see them learn things
and grow, but it becomes very apparent why God makes kids for younger people.
Not only can they wear you out, but they make you do things you wouldn’t
normally do. Check out this picture of me and the 2 year old trying on our play
dough eye brows for size. Click Here. Funny pic. Again,
another example of the Circle of Life from 88 to 2. To have both of these
experiences in one week was a true blessing that I won’t soon forget.
Sunday was time for Mrs. C. and I to do whatever we wanted. The good part
about having Grandkids
is that you get to play with them and they
go home. We are empty nesters and are reclaiming time to enjoy each other. So
after some deliberation, the impending blue skies and 80 degree weather, we
decided to saddle up on the bikes and head to Sedona and on up through Oak Creek
Canyon to see the changing of the leaves which we had never seen, (see from the
air) and have lunch at Junipine Resort Café out
on the patio. With the weather in the upper 60’s and Sunny in Sedona, it was the
perfect long sleeve or sweatshirt riding weather. The golden beauty of the leave
changing on this ride was outstanding. See
the Photos.
All of us that live in the area have probably ridden to Sedona many times.
BUT, what made this time special for us is that for one of the few
times, we really had no time schedule which allowed us to explore other parts of
Sedona, or simply make a right turn, or left turn whenever we wanted. This led
us to some new stops that I want to share with you today.
Normally when we ride to Sedona we will either come up I-17 to Hwy. 179
into Sedona, which is the best way to go. Or we might be coming
from Jerome and coming in from the Southwest on 89A. But almost always we go
right on through Sedona and on up 89A to Flagstaff to make the loop back down
I-17 back to the valley. This time, we decided to explore some things that we
hadn’t seen for years and some new things we had not experienced.
Here are four stops that you should consider making while in Sedona.
Chapel of the Holy Cross. (
Map)
Our route this time was I-17 to Hwy. 179 headed for Sedona.
About 3 miles from the junction of 89A you will see signs that say
“Chapel of the Holy Cross”. Turn right on Chapel Rd. and go 1
mile to the Chapel that you will see up in the red rocks on your left. Parking
is right below the chapel. There is motorcycle parking up near the top right
below the ramp. The chapel is built into the buttes of Sedona and projects a
giant cross that seems to come out of the red rocks. The project was completed
in 1956 after 18 months of construction at the cost of $300,000. It is free to
visit and is a must see while in Sedona. In 2007, Arizonans voted the Chapel to
be one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona. Click
Here for Photo.
Junipine Resort Café. (
Map)
Junipine Resort Café is located just 8.5 miles North of the
Hwy. 179/89A intersection in the middle of Oak Creek Canyon. This is a beautiful
ride and the perfect place to eat lunch on their patio and watch the bikes ride
by on your way to Flagstaff. It is also a good turnaround spot if you just
wanted to take a short ride up Oak Creek Canyon for lunch and back to Sedona.
Check with them for closing times. They closed at 2 PM on the Sunday we were
there. 928-282-7406. Get some fresh apples now on this route from the roadside
vendors. See Photo.
Ride up to Sedona Airport. (
Map)
You might be thinking, why would I want to ride up to the
airport? This is an unknown nugget for motorcycle riders, or most people that
visit Sedona for that matter. The airport sits on a Mesa in Sedona at 4827 feet.
But it also happens to provide the best views of West Sedona that there is
without hiking. This 1.2 mile ride up the winding road will take you to a
parking area just across from a viewing area that even has binoculars installed.
This is a fantastic view that you will enjoy. It sits right next to the Sky
Ranch Motel that would also be a nice place to spend the night. Take a left on
Airport Rd. that is just 1 mile West of the Hwy. 179/89A intersection. Click Here for Photo.
The Enchantment Resort. (
Map)
I saved this for last because it is an absolutely beautiful ride and an
even bigger payoff.
This world class resort is located in Boynton
Canyon, a box canyon deep into the red rocks of West Sedona. The setting for
this magnificent property is stunning. We have lived here for 32 years and had
never ridden back there. This 5.2 mile ride from Hwy. 89A is a jewel. The views
of the red rock mountains are
incredible and always in your line of sight. From the 179/89A intersection go
West on 89A 3 miles to Dry Creek Rd. Go North on Dry Creek which turns into
Boynton Pass Rd. to Boynton Cyn Rd. Turn right and follow the signs to
Enchantment. You will get to a guard shack. Tell them that you
would like to go to the lobby. They will take your name and let you in. Go into
the restaurant area and look at the pool overlook. Click Here for Photo.
The next time you are in Sedona, do what we did, and plan some extra time
to really enjoy the beauty that we have within 100 miles of us here in the
Phoenix area. Be sure to look at the pictures that I took along the way. You
will get a good sense of what it looks like with the fall colors and the beauty
of Sedona.
Ride Safe and enjoy,
Barry
