Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
10/20/10

Greetings Riders,

Well, it looks like Fall has finally arrived here in the desert of Arizona as the Chamber of Commerce weather is finally taking hold so that we will be enjoying low to mid 80's weather for at least the next couple of weeks. Should provide some fantastic daytime and evening riding. So pick out your destinations and have some fun.

Back in February I did an article about the upcoming Arizona Centennial Celebration. (Click Here to Read) On February 14, 1912, Arizona became the 48th state and the last of the contiguous states to enter the Union of the United States of America. On February 14, 2012, Arizona will celebrate its 100th year of Statehood. To draw attention to the Arizona Centennial, the committee thought that it would be a great idea to build a copper themed motorcycle to honor the State and draw attention to the Centennial. Others embraced the idea and the concept of the Copper Chopper was born.

I am proud to announce that long time Arizona resident and world famous custom motorcycle builder Paul Yaffe was chosen to build the Arizona Centennial Copper Chopper and after 9 months of hard work, creativity and outstanding fabrication, the motorcycle that will serve as the ambassador to bring attention to the Arizona Centennial celebration is now finished and will be unveiled by Paul Yaffe and Governor Jan Brewer on Saturday, October 23rd at the Arizona State Fair at 5pm. Click Here for details.

As I mentioned in the newsletter in February, it is still amazing to me that the State is using a custom motorcycle that will be toured and displayed all over the State for the next 15 months in such a high profile position for the Centennial. And not only that, embracing the idea of having a ride-in from all over the state and the Southwest. That is really cool and something that all of us who ride should be proud of.

You could almost compare the evolving of motorcycling to country music. 30 years ago, no one wanted anything to do with country music. Now it has crossed over into mainstream and is the number one genre of music. Similar scenario with motorcycling. 30 years ago when you would pull up next to a car on the street, you could hear the electric door locks being employed and the driver looking straight ahead. Now people will give you the nod and even talk to you at a light. And with the honor of having the tour of the "Copper Chopper" as the Signature Event and ambassador for the Centennial, I think we should all be proud.

Paul was tasked to build a bike that would represent the Five C's that the State of Arizona was built on - copper, cattle, cotton, citrus and climate. I have had the opportunity to see Copper Chopper mostly completed and I will tell you that Paul really went over the top on this one, going the extra mile to make this one of his greatest creations ever to come out of the Yaffe shop. After getting the tour of the Chopper from Paul and listening to him describe the one-off concepts on this bike, you could hear it in his voice and tell by his enthusiasm when explaining each piece that he was very proud to be able to build this historic motorcycle for his home State of Arizona. It is truly a masterpiece of motorcycle art that we will all enjoy every time we see it. Thanks Paul for making us proud.

If you would like to see the bike for the first time being unveiled, you can do so this Saturday afternoon at 5pm at the State Fair. Tidbits and Updates:

As a lot of you know by now, after 14 years, the Billet Bar has closed the doors. I talked to Myron last week at the Westgate Bike Night and he wanted me to let everyone know how much he appreciates everyone that frequented the Billet over the last 14 years. He said he had made so many friends over the years that it was an extremely difficult decision to close it down. The building is being remodeled and will open under a new name and concept early next year. I am anxious to see what they do with this prime location in downtown Scottsdale. We wish Myron well and thank him for giving us a place to ride to and be welcomed on our motorcycles. It just isn't going to seem right not to have the Billet Bar as part of the motorcycle community anymore.

4th Annual Anthony Holly Memorial Ride. Once a year on a cool fall morning, hundreds of folks shine up their bikes and put the rubber to the road to raise money for Arizona's kids. Come join us for the 4th Annual Anthony Holly Memorial Ride on Saturday, October 30th as we do our part to help Arizona's youth. He was shot and killed in the line of duty on February 19, 2007 while coming to the support of a fellow officer. He was 24 years old. There is a $25 per rider and $15 per passenger registration fee and proceeds benefit the children's charities of the Anthony Holly Foundation. November 4th - 7th
10th Annual Rocky Point Rally. Yes, it is on and Mogollon is going to be the featured musical entertainment on Saturday night at Las Palomas on Sandy Beach. This should be a great concert. It is hard to believe, but this is the 10th anniversary of the Rally. I know that some are hesitant to go to Mexico right now with all of the bad press down there, but Rocky Point has seemed to avoid most of the issues that you hear about in the press. Do your own research about issues in Rocky Point, don't let the broad brush of the press decide for you. Then see if you want to go or not. One thing we do know, this is always a good time. Here is the Agenda. If you are looking to make a reservation for lodging, Click Here. If you want a good snapshot of the Rocky Point Rally, check out this video from a couple of years ago.
