Cyclerides.com Weekly
Update
9/26/12
Greetings Riders,
Well, I am declaring riding season in the Phoenix area officially
here! The daytime temps are cooling down and the word “Layering”
will soon be part of our riding vocabulary especially if we ride up North.
Daytime temps are forecast in the mid to high 80’s starting October 7th with
lows in the high 50’s. Whoo Hoo! Great for day trips around the state and superb
for Bike Nights around the valley. Goodbye to the scorching Summer!!
Last week I left you with Part 1 of our awesome ride up Hwy. 141
to the Gateway Auto Museum in Gateway, Colorado. If you missed it, Click Here to get caught up and
see the beautiful pictures. The Gateway Auto Museum is something
that I have been wanting to do for quite a while and was our destination for the
day, but after the ride we had just taken, it was going to be a tall order for
it to top that. The museum is made up of just over 40 vehicles from the
privately owned Hendricks Collection, owned by John Hendricks, founder of the
Discovery Communications which started Discover Channel in 1982. He now has over
100 networks including TLC, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, Discovery Kids and
many more.
The Gateway Auto Museum is without a doubt the most enjoyable car museum I
have ever experienced and unlike any that I have ever seen. It is
not the quantity of cars that you will see, but the quality of cars and the
viewing experience that will envelope you as you tour the display. This is far
from just 40 cars arranged in a warehouse for you to view. Hendricks, with his
media background, wanted the Gateway Auto Museum to tell the story of how the
automobile impacted society. It is truly an educational experience with
historical perspective in which he follows his “Discover” theme throughout.
You start your tour with a $15 admission and then step back in time in the
Open Road Theater
with a 6 minute video with clips from the past
100 years narrated by Walter Cronkite talking about the American Automobile and
its place in society – to the brief video clip showing the acquisition of the
Auto Museum’s own $3.24 million dollar version of the “Mona Lisa” – the 1954
Oldsmobile F-88 Concept Car. You soon
realize that this is going to be an educational and historical experience that
is very much about the magic of cars and how they shaped the culture and history
of the United States from the industrial age to Hollywood and on through the
50’, 60’s and 70’s.
Once you have viewed the Open Road video, you are anxious to enter the
museum
through the double doors that will transform you back in
time. The Gateway Colorado Automobile Museum tells the engaging story about the
marvels of automotive history and the revolution in personal transportation
brought about by the invention, production and marketing of the American
automobile. This story is so broad in scope that it takes a 30,000 square foot
facility to house more than 40 cars in all. The centerpiece of the museum is a
multi-car display that takes you through the history of the American auto
creating a timeline of innovation and evolution that captures 100 years of
automotive history in America from the 1906 Cadillac Model H Coupe to
the 2006 Chip Foose Mustang Stallion.
Surrounding the Timeline are five themed galleries that incorporate
educational,
interactive displays exploring various topics relating
to the history of the American auto and its place in our industry, pop culture
and lives. For example, as you walk near a flat panel display hanging
on the wall, the motion sensor will start a 3 minute video explaining the
history of the cars in that particular display. This take interactivity to a way
cool level.
One very cool story that we got from one of the guys who cares for the cars
in the museum was the history of this
1957
Chevy Convertible.
Apparently a doctor bought this car brand
new in 1957 for his wife to drive. Shortly after he bought the car for her, he
passed away. The woman stopped driving the car with only 500 miles on it and
completely preserved the car by wrapping it in plastic and storing it in a
climate controlled storage. In 2005, John Hendricks bought the car from this
lady for $100,000. It has every option available back then and is completely
original right down to the tires. This beautiful baby blue 57 Chevy is now one
of the highlights of this collection.
There are so many awesome cars to choose from, but my personal favorite was
the
1929 Packard.
This
is one classy automobile with a great color. Mrs. C’s favorite was the 1936
Auburn Supercharged Cabriolet. And the one that
we both agreed was really cool is the 1932
Auburn Boattail Speedster.
The 6 galleries in the museum are as follows:
Mass Mobility Gallery – America Gets behind the Wheel.
The
Mass Mobility Gallery provides an introduction to the early years of automobile
manufacturing. Cadillac, Pierce-Arrow, Winton and Ford are highlighted in this
gallery centered around telling the story of the history of the early American
automobile – from building each car individually to the advent of mass
production and factory work.
View
the Gallery and Video.
Hollywood High Style Gallery – The 1930’s
Glamour, style, grace, and glitz flaunted by the rich, the
famous and the Hollywood stars of the 1930’s included the manner in which they
arrived. The most exclusive cars of the time included the Packards, the Auburns
and, of course, the Duesenberg. Step back in time and experience high style for
yourself! View
the Gallery and Video.
American Muscle Gallery
Muscle cars, speed, roaring engines and squealing tires. Fast
food, diners, and great music bring you back to the 60’s. From the Hemi ‘Cuda to
the Judge, the cars in this gallery are Americas’ all around favorites. View
the Gallery and Video.
Custom Crazy Gallery
Think you’re custom crazy? The automobiles in this collection
will make your heart throb. From the hot orange In-Excess that is more
blindingly powerful than its intense color to the incredible story behind the
Dodge Polara with its insane brawn – you’ll sense the sheer dominance of the
open road that the vehicles in this gallery command. View
the Gallery and Video.
F-88 Gallery
The F-88 Gallery houses the one-of-a-kind 1954 Oldsmobile F-88
Concept Car. The “Mona Lisa” of the Hendricks Collection – the F-88 has a
display fit with granite turn-table and a host of information regarding it’s
design, production and acquisition by the Hendricks Collection. View
the Gallery and Video.
Timeline Gallery
Filtering through the years, layers of stories, and decades of
American automotive history – you will come away with a true understanding of
what the automobile did for America. Independence in our nation was deeply
enhanced through our mobility as a society made possible by the American
automobile. View
the Gallery and Video.
If you love automobiles and the history of the role they played in
sculpting the fabric of our society,
you will absolutely love The
Gateway Auto Museum. This is truly a fantastic experience that you will want to
put on your bucket list of things to do. And best of all, Highway 141 is an epic
experience for anyone wanting to go to Gateway to see it. There is really no
other reason to be going through Gateway as it is off the beaten path and not on
the way to any other destination, but the road and the museum are well worth the
effort to plan a ride around it. We spent a total of about 3 hours there that
included the museum and walking the grounds of Gateway Canyons
Resort.
I have taken 141 photos from the museum that include many pictures
of the graphics telling about the collection that you can enlarge to
read. Just click on the thumbnail of the photo you would like to see, then hold
your mouse over the picture on the right where you will be able to enlarge to
read it. Click Here to View Photos. Click
Slideshow for best viewing.
I give this trip 5 Spokes out of 5 and recommend that you add
this trip to your future planned rides.
