Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
6/28/17

Greetings Riders,

First of all this week, I would like to say that Mrs. C. and my thoughts and prayers are with the people who have been affected by the wildfires across Arizona and also for the Firefighters that are battling these blazes. May they all be safe and effective in fighting these fires. I used to not worry about these guys, just assuming they would be alright. But now, every time I hear about one of these wildfires it takes me right back to when I heard the news about the Yarnell Hotshots from 4 years ago. That event really drove home the risk that these guys go through. We wish them well in getting these fires under control.

Well, as of Saturday night, we are back from what I have called the Cyclerides.com Adventure 2017. This was a 15 day combination of a Fly and Ride that took us to New Orleans, LA, Memphis, TN, Knoxville, TN, Cleveland, OH and Detroit, MI. It was designed to check some places off of my bucket list including the WW2 Museum in New Orleans, Graceland in Memphis, getting in some riding in East Tennessee and surrounding area, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit. From the looks of the weather while we were gone, it seemed like a good time not to be in Phoenix.

As I mentioned in January of this year, I would be bringing you not only good places to ride, but also giving you a glimpse of destinations that you could either ride to or just take a vacation to. With the internet these days, you can find out a lot of information on your own, but I will give you my personal insights on the areas that we visited and let you know from my perspective what we saw, experienced and provide some tips complete with photos and links to more information.

I would like to thank everyone who followed us around on the Cyclerides.com Facebook. We were burning the candle at both ends near the end of the trip and I didn't get some of the last photos posted. I will be doing that over the next couple of days. But if you would like to get caught up, you can go to www.facebook.com/cycleridescom to see what is there. Anyone can see these photos.

The adventure began in New Orleans, LA on Friday, June 9th. For us it was about an 8 hour flight to New Orleans with a stop for fuel in Comanche, TX. Our main reason for going to New Orleans was to see the National WW2 Museum. My Dad did a trip sponsored by Gary Sinise with some other WW2 Vets 2 years ago and said we needed to see it. He was right! It is ranked by Trip Advisor as the #1 attraction in New Orleans, #4 top museum in the United States and #11 top museum in the world, designated by Congress as the official museum about WW2 and by far the best war museum that I have ever seen.

I could write multiple pages about this experience, but I won't. It is even hard to put into words the impact that touring this museum has on you. The presentation of "The Road to Berlin" and "The Road to Tokyo" as you walk through these interactive exhibits are absolutely fantastic and seems to put you right into the action with the sounds, decor and video. The following are some words from the web site that sum it up better than I could.

The National WWII Museum features a rich collection of artifacts that bring history to life. Discover the most impactful event of the 20th century and the legacy of the greatest generation in thought-provoking exhibits, and explore the American experience in the war that changed the world. From D-Day galleries to the 4D cinematic experience, Beyond All Boundaries, from the soaring US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center to the groundbreaking new Campaigns of Courage, this world-renowned history museum is designed to inspire visitors of all ages in the lessons of World War II and the stories of heroism, tragedy, and liberation.

I can't say enough about the National WW2 Museum. The C-41 transport plane hanging from the ceiling as you walk in the building is impressive to start, and the 4D cinematic movie to start the tour is an amazing production. It sets the tone for you to immerse yourself into some of our most important history as a nation. Then it gets better from there. This museum should be put on everyone's to do list. If for nothing else, to honor the hundreds of thousands that lost their life to change the course of the plans of world domination by Germany and Japan, that led to making the United States the world power that it is today. My family bought a brick commemorating my Dads service in WW2. That brick is now installed on the sidewalk in front of the museum. I was able to find it and take a picture of it for my Dad. I will be back next week with my "Eye Opening" visit to the French Quarter and Bourbon Street in New Orleans with photos that include the viewing of my first naked bicycle parade, let by the police. That is one crazy place! And it wasn't even Mardi Gras.

Even though the photos don't even come close to the experience, you can see the enormity and unique presentation of the  National
WW2 Museum. The interactivity with video and the 3D visuals are what bring it to life. Click Here for Photos. For best viewing, click on the big picture to the right, then arrow to the right to view in full screen.
