Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
5/24/17

Greetings Riders,

Well, it looks like Summer is upon us here in Phoenix, AZ. The 100 barrier has been broken and by looking at the future forecast the low 100's may become the norm. After living here for 36 years, the low 100's don't really bother me that much as long as it is dry. But above 107 it starts to be a little irritating. The good news it is supposed to only be in the upper 90's for the Last 2 Cyclerides.com Bike Nights at Westgate Entertainment District. This week we have Live Music with "Strangeland" 6-9 PM and we end up with "74th Street Band" on June 1st for the last night. Evening weather should be great, so help us close out the last 2 nights of the Spring Season.

If you missed the newsletter last week about Motorcycle Safety Month, Click Here to read. I give you a couple of riding safety techniques that I use that you might find interesting. I'm sure you have a few of your own. Feel free to share them with me.

As everyone knows, this is Memorial Day Weekend coming up. Out of all of the National Holidays that we have, in my opinion, this is one of the most important. It encompasses everyone that is an American as it gives us a time for pause to remember those who have fought for the freedom that we have today. At some point in our ancestry, all of us probably have someone that has served our country in the military, and this is our National Day to recognize them.

Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union sailors and soldiers.

During that first national celebration, former Union Gen. and sitting Ohio Congressman James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there.

“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.”
- James A. Garfield
May 30, 1868 Arlington National Cemetery

This event was inspired by local observances of the day that had taken place in several towns throughout America in the three years after the Civil War. In 1873, New York was the first state to designate Memorial Day as a legal holiday. By the late 1800s, many more cities and communities observed Memorial Day, and several states had declared it a legal holiday. After World War I, it became an occasion for honoring those who died in all of America’s wars and was then more widely established as a national holiday throughout the United States.

In 1971, Congress passed the National Uniform Monday Holiday Act and established that Memorial Day was to be celebrated on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery each year with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Traditionally, the President or Vice President lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 5,000 people attend the ceremony annually.

President Ronald Reagan is credited with reviving the practice of honoring Memorial Day and its meaning. One of his famous speeches was given at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day in 1986.

“Today is the day we put aside to remember fallen heroes and to pray that no heroes will ever have to die for us again. It's a day of thanks for the valor of others, a day to remember the splendor of America and those of her children who rest in this cemetery and others. It's a day to be with the family and remember.

If you would like to be a part of a Memorial Day Celebration recognizing our military fallen heroes, go to the 11th Annual Flags for our Fallen Memorial Day Rally at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona located on Cave Creek Rd. and Pinnacle Peak Rd. This is a beautiful sight to see as Cave Creek Rd. will be lined 500 American Flags on 10' Poles with motorcycles in between them. This will give you an opportunity to pay tribute to those that have served our country and to salute the family members as they enter the Cemetery.

Motorcycles start parking at 5:30 AM.
National Anthem at 7:00 AM
Bi-Planes flyover in missing man formation at 7:45 AM.
Official Ceremony starts in Cemetery at 8:00 AM.
