Cyclerides.com Weekly
Update
1/11/12
Greetings Riders,
Well, we are now into the second week of 2012 and it already seems like
Christmas was a long time ago.
If you missed the newsletter last
week about my flying cell phone and some other good tips, Click Here to read.
With the encouragement of a couple of friends,
this past
Saturday I entered the Mako Glide into the Easyriders
Motorcycle Show at the Anaheim Convention Center. Jim Michaud offered to take it
out there with his bike and Paul Yaffe offered his crew to help get it set up
before I got there, so it was really hard to refuse. Entering it in shows wasn’t
something I had ever planned on doing, because I built it to ride, but they
really made this pretty easy for me. So I said what the heck, let’s put it in
there and see how it does against the SoCal bikes.
Mrs. C. and I had limited time, so we decided to fly the Cessna out to
Fullerton, CA, which is just 7 miles from the Anaheim Convention
Center, and make a day trip out of it. That was a good plan on paper, but flying
to the California Coast in the morning is a crap shoot at best if you are not
IFR rated, which I am not. We knew when we left at 7 AM Saturday morning that
there was a marine layer over the coastal areas but were hoping that during the
3 hours it took us to get there that it would clear out before we arrived.
Again, a good plan, that didn’t happen.
It was severe clear the entire trip until we got to about 15 miles from
Fullerton.
We could see the low level marine layer from several
miles away, but without being able to see the coastline, we were hoping that it
had moved back out far enough to allow us to get in. That didn’t happen.
Click
Here to see what it looked like below. Our
airport was just West of the mountain you see on the left by about 5 miles.
There was an 1100 foot ceiling and about a 500 foot layer of clouds covering our
intended airport. There was no way I was going to be able to land VFR in
Fullerton at this time.
So now it was on to Plan B, whatever that was. I had seen the
Corona airport about 5 miles back that I could land at, but by the time I got
back there, the clouds had pretty well covered that up too. So now it was on to
Plan C as soon as I figured that out. I had anticipated something like this
could happen before I got there, but no matter how much you plan in advance when
flying, you still have to execute the plan, and when flying in busy California
airspace with restrictions all around you, it can get a little tense, to say the
least, when you deviate from the intended route.
While searching for another airport, I was still in touch with SoCal
Approach which was very helpful in helping me get to where I needed to go. My next choice was Riverside Muni which was totally clear and is a
towered Delta class airport. SoCal approach gave me the ATIS and Tower frequency
I needed for the airport, but after doing circles up there it takes a minute or
two to get your bearings again. I contacted Riverside tower and told them that I
was unfamiliar and had to divert to their airport due to weather and they were
more than helpful to get me in safely. It sure is nice to have a bunch of nice
air traffic controllers out there to watch over you while you are flying.
We were now 37 miles away from our intended location. Our friends Scott and
Dana were going to come pick us up at Fullerton. Now we had to ask
them to fetch us at Riverside to get to the Convention Center to see the show.
We got there at around Noon to take a quick run through the show. There were a
lot of beautiful bikes on display of all kinds like you would expect to see at
an Easyriders show. Unfortunately, we were only able to stay a couple of hours
at the show as our ride back to the airport were driving back to Phoenix and we
had to go. But we had time to see everything.
I was excited to get a text from Paul Yaffe later that night that the Mako
Glide had gotten 1st Place
in the Radical Bagger category.
(See Trophy) I never expected
that to happen, but was really excited and surprised. Congratulations as well to
Jim Michaud who brought home the People’s Choice Best of Show trophy. I took
several photos of the show so that you could see a lot of the bikes that were
displayed. Click Here to view.
I will be at “
The Ride” with the
Mako Glide this Saturday.
The Ride will be leaving from Hacienda
Harley-Davidson at 11 AM. See you there.
