Natalie stood on one side of a chain link fence separating the women's section and the men's section. On the other side stood Harold with a bandaged arm. They reached out to touch hands through the links.
She hadn't been questioned as much as she'd expected to be. She needed to consider whether this apparent "gentle" questioning was a ruse to get her to be less cautious. Yet for now she simply wanted a respite from her constant planning and action, from being responsible every single moment for others.
"Are you okay?" Harold said.
"We're all together -- the children are not kept separately. Are all three boys with you?"
Harold nodded and she hesitated before going on, glancing around to see if anyone stood near enough to hear her.
"I'm not sure we haven't jumped from the frying pan into the fire."
Harold stared at her.
"Have you considered that this side of the Mississippi is also controlled by the Provisional Government?" she said. "Perhaps after everything we did we haven't really escaped."
